FARGO — Phil Seljevold was an elementary school physical education teacher and was best known in Moorhead as the longtime athletic director at Moorhead High. His son Larry coached track and field in the Fargo public school system for 30 years before retiring.

It’s unlikely House Seljevold had to worry about putting quality running shoes on their children. Pete Seljevold, Phil’s son and administrator of the Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota Worksite Wellness Initiative, is doing his best so other families don’t have to worry either.

“The more we can get kids moving in a good pair of shoes, the better,” Pete Seljevold said. “A lot of kids don’t even have the basics of a good pair of tennis shoes to be active in, to wear in physical education class at school.”

He saw it first hand. His wife, Lisa, was a long-time first grade teacher at Moorhead State Schools.

“A lot of kids didn’t have the basics,” Pete said.

His company has put both feet in the water to help raise funds for the BNSF Railway Friday Night 5K. This is a major fundraiser for the marathon’s annual “Shoes for Kids” campaign, which has been running since 2010.

Each registration donates $2 to the cause.

This means that Blue Cross is pushing for more participants. Registration is still ongoing on the marathon website at Fargomarathon.com.

“Creating a healthier North Dakota is at the heart of what we do here at Blue,” said Dan Conrad, CEO of BCBSND.

An assortment of local businesses got involved in the marathon’s “Tag 5 Corporate Challenge” program, which asks people when registering to tag friends or businesses on social media to also join the cause using the hashtag “#Tag5Fargo”. The goal is 5,000 people, either walkers, runners or a combination of the two.

“And even if you can’t run or walk, come out and cheer someone on,” Pete Seljevold said. “The marathon is such a big part of spring in Fargo-Moorhead. Go out and participate as much as you can.

In a volatile week for its stock market, India has made a new billionaire. Delhi-based Campus Activewear founder Hari Krishan Agarwal, 66, has entered the three-comma club after his athletic shoe company’s stellar IPO. Campus Activewear shares are trading at a handsome 23% premium to the IPO price. Agarwal’s 74% stake is now worth around $1 billion.

India’s $9 billion footwear industry has spawned three billionaires in recent years. Delhi-based brothers Mukand Lal Dua and Ramesh Kumar Dua, who run the $350 million (revenue) Relaxo Shoes, which sells everything from casual sandals to dress shoes; and Rafique Malik, who went public with his $107 million (revenue) from Mumbai-based Metro Brands just last December. (Although Metro is listed at 13% off).

Agarwal’s encounter with entrepreneurship began in 1983 when he founded the sports shoe brand “Action”. In 2005, he launched “Campus” sneakers at prices below $10. Budget pricing has helped Campus make strides big enough to compete with global brands like Nike. , Adidas and Puma, which sell athletic shoes for over $35.

“It took advantage of the huge gap in the Indian sports shoe market – in the price range of $10 to $40,” says Campus CFO Raman Chawla.

An April 2022 report by Gurgaon consulting firm Technopak notes that in FY 2021, Campus was India’s largest player in the branded sports and leisure segment (merger of “athletics” and “leisure ”), both in value and number of shoes. It holds a 17% market share in value and nearly 25% in volume.

Campus sold 13 million pairs in 2021, generating $94 million in revenue. This was down slightly from the previous year’s revenue of $95 million, due to the pandemic, but sales are picking up again: Campus recorded revenue of $111 million for nine months ending December 2021.

Analysts expect Local Campus to benefit more as athletic shoes are the fastest growing segment of the footwear industry. And they believe that the demand for such shoes is well positioned to continue to increase. According to Technopak, per capita expenditure on leisure and sports products in India is only $1.9 compared to $33.8 in China and $227.3 in the United States.

This growth potential has attracted investment fund TPG and billionaire Anil Rai Gupta, who controls electrical equipment producer Havells. They invested in Campus in 2018 and continue to hold stakes of 7.6% and 2%, respectively, even after selling some of their shares in the IPO.

“Athleisure is a very underpenetrated segment,” says Sneha Poddar, research analyst at Mumbai investment house Motilal Oswal. “Campus is also expanding its geographic reach.” Campus’ main market consists of small towns in northern and eastern India, but it is now eyeing larger metros and establishing a national footprint. “Additionally, it also expands the product range from sports shoes to casual shoes,” says Poddar.

Despite its IPO, Campus remains a family affair. Agarwal’s son, Nikhil Aggarwal, 37, an industrial engineer from Purdue University, started working at Campus in 2008 and became CEO nine years later. Nikhil’s wife, Prerna, is the marketing manager. The founder’s wife, Vinod Agarwal, who led supply chain initiatives and a network of Campus athletic shoe manufacturers, served on the board until September 2021.

Having had the chance to lend a hand to his new community of Los Angeles, Evan Phillips did not hesitate. The day after the Dodgers reliever pitched 1 1/3 innings scoreless in Pittsburgh, he spent Thursday morning at an elementary school in South Central Los Angeles helping distribute shoes to children.

Phillips and his wife, Liz, helped the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation and Shoes That Fit distribute 500 pairs of new athletic shoes to every student at 28th Street Elementary School.

“I remember when I was younger, every time someone from a professional sports team, something like that, when they had an event like that at school, it was a super special day” , said Phillips. “It’s just a special day to see these guys, the joy on their faces. To afford a new pair of shoes, there really is nothing better.

Shoes That Fit is a national non-profit organization based in Claremont, Calif., that tackles one of the most visible signs of poverty in America by giving children in need new athletic shoes so they can can go to school with dignity and joy. Named California Nonprofit of the Year, Shoes That Fit delivered new athletic shoes to more than 127,000 kids in 50 states last year alone.

“The Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation believes that shoes can increase athletic ability, shoes can increase academic achievement, and frankly, they give kids the chance to come to school,” said LADF CEO Nichol Whiteman. . “At the end of the day, there are families whose children wear shoes that are too small for them, and they have to choose between shoes and putting food on the table. She said there were families and students at the school still dealing with the trauma and ramifications of this event.

“We want to be able to support communities and provide essentials to families who need them most,” Whiteman said.

HORSHEADS, NY (WETM) — Horseheads High School shined a spotlight on local track and field talent and honored two coaching legends with their first annual Blue Shoes Invitational.

Ten of the top local high school track and field teams gathered at Horseheads High School for the inaugural Blue Shoes Invitational event on Saturday. The new athletics event saw plenty of action among student athletes, but opened with a tribute to two local legendary figures.

The event began with a moment of silence in honor of 33-year-old Horseheads coach Carl Gross and beloved Horseheads athletics coach Tom Jansen.

Gross coached the Blue Raiders in several sports, including athletics and football. After a career that saw multiple section and state titles, Gross continued to share his love for local sports as an official. The longtime coach inspired a love for the sports he was a part of and forged lifelong bonds with his athletes who affectionately called him a “Gross Dad”.

Even after his passing in 2021, Gross continues to make an impact on the local community. Gross has coached several athletes who made it to the college level and other athletes who now impact the region today. Former Gross riders attended the event in his honor including; Amy Balash, head coach of Elmira, Terri Gill, coach of Horseheads, and Patty Frost Lamoreaux, former state champion in the 100 meters.

Horseheads athletics coach Tom Jansen died aged 62 in January following a long health battle, but the impact that the longtime teacher and coach has had on the community is unparalleled. Jansen had a successful 31-year career shaping some of the region’s top track and field competitors, but what he was most proud of was instilling life lessons in his athletes.

Shoes.com is changing hands again – this time joining the Designer Brands Inc. family.

In a statement sent to FN today, parent company DSW said it had acquired “key strategic retail domain ‘Shoes.com’ and associated intellectual property assets” for an undisclosed amount. Private equity firm CriticalPoint Capital LLC is the latest publicly known parent company of Shoes.com, but Designer Brands declined to reveal whether it was the seller.

A company spokesperson noted that the domain and intellectual property were spun off as part of the sale and that Designer Brands did not purchase any underlying operating business assets.

FN has contacted Critical Point for comment.

A landing page on Shoes.com currently states that the dotcom is now “part of DSW” and a link directs shoppers to the DSW.com site. Customers with questions about existing orders placed before 04/25/2022 are asked to fill out a form on the website.

Designer Brands has yet to provide details on Shoes.com’s future, saying only in a statement, “This is a new acquisition and we have further development plans around it, which we will share in the months to come.”

A spokesperson added, “The Shoes.com high-traffic domain reinforces Designer Brands’ long-term strategy to expand its digital footprint and strategically position and distribute Designer Brands’ own brands, as well as shoes from top brands. national partner brands.

Shoes.com has changed hands several times over the past decade.

In 2014, the website was sold by Brown Shoe Co. (now Caleres) to Canadian online retailer ShoeMe. Three years later, in January 2017, this company abruptly closed its operations, leaving behind many disgruntled customers who did not know how to receive orders or make returns.

In April of the same year, Walmart purchased the Shoes.com domain and merged it with its newly acquired ShoeBuy division, renaming the entire footwear e-commerce division as Shoes.com. For the next few years, Shoes.com was responsible for handling all shoe merchandising for Walmart’s website as well as Jet.com.

But when the pandemic took hold and Walmart started offloading business, Shoes.com was one of those to go.

Private equity firm CriticalPoint Capital LLC acquired reader dotcom in October 2020. In January 2021, CPC said it had integrated Shoes.com into its Running Specialty Group, a footwear and athletic platform that included at JackRabbit era, Olympia Sports and Clever Training. Labels.

Once worn by Wilt Chamberlain and Julius Erving, Converse’s flagship Chuck Taylor All Stars and Pro Leathers may have outlived their usefulness on the basketball court, but not in the fashion world.

Today, the multidisciplinary brand pgLang (short for Programming Language) of Kendrick Lamar and Dave Free released two new shoes in collaboration with Converse. The project, called pgLang for Converse, which began the design phase more than two years ago, was the first non-musical assignment for the company after launching in 2020. The line consists of a new version of the Chuck 70 and Pro from Converse. Leather trainers, each in white with the pgLang logo somewhere on the upper.

For the Chuck Taylors, the silhouette has barely changed since the shoe’s debut in 1922, and the same has been true for the Pro Leathers since 1976. Where most collaborators try something innovative or loud With the age-old designs, pgLang and its team of creatives went for something minimalist. The new Chuck 70, dubbed thegoodluckchuck, sports the traditional silhouette, but with red and blue trim along the rubber sole and an embossed gold star on the All-Star patch.
