During his freshman year of college in 1996, Jordan Geller spent the money his parents gave him for living expenses on a pair of sneakers – the coveted and recently launched Air Jordan 11 OG ‘Bred’ shoes. .

“I was 23 when I bought my first pair of Jordans, and back then I didn’t consider them assets – they were just things I loved and always wanted when I was a kid, but couldn’t, because they were too expensive,” Geller said in a phone interview.

“I only walked on the heels of the shoes because I didn’t want to have creases on my toes. And every day after I got back to my dorm, I cleaned them with a toothbrush to keep them as pristine as possible.

From partnerships with luxury brands to collaborations with celebrities and athletes, the sneakers have caught the eye of alternative asset buyers looking to make a profit in the resale market with these limited shoe releases.

The growing popularity of shoes as an alternative asset has even caught the attention of investment firms.

In a note to clients dated June 6, Cowen Inc. estimated that the sneaker and streetwear resale market could grow to around US$30 billion worldwide by fiscal year 2030.

“Our proprietary work confirms that sneaker resale remains one of the most permanent consumer trends as transient pandemic-related spending patterns fade into 2023 – and we further reinforce the bullish category calls we have launched since 2019. Sneaker resale significantly outpaces the broader e-commerce ecosystem, which is slowing in early 2022,” the report states.

In 2000, when Nike released a retro version of the same Jordan shoe that Geller had purchased four years earlier, he decided to try selling his old sneakers to help cover the cost of a brand new pair.

“The shoes sold for US$162.50. When they were new in 1996, I bought them for US$125 – so I sold my used shoes for more than I paid for them,” Geller said.

Since then, Geller’s life has revolved around sneakers. He even won three Guinness World Records for his collection. The first record he reached dates back to 2012 for his collection of 2,388 pairs of sneakers.

In 2019, Geller sold the most expensive sneakers he owned – a pair of Nike Waffle Racing Flat Moon shoes – for US$437,500. Two years later, he broke his own record with a pair of game-worn Air Jordan 1s that sold for US$560,000 at a Sotheby’s auction.

When it comes to breaking down the huge demand for these sneakers as an alternate asset, Geller said one has to look to Michael Jordan’s loyal fan base.

“To start and describe the lore around Jordans, you have to understand that Michael Jordan is so charismatic, so many people love him and adore him,” Geller said.

“A lot of us grew up looking at it and wanted these shoes, but they were too expensive. The nostalgia we all feel for this sneaker makes us want to have it, but Nike keeps releasing shoes in limited quantities, so you pay two to three times more on the resale market.

BILLION DOLLAR ALTERNATIVE ASSETS MARKET

StockX, a trading platform for alternative assets such as sneakers and trading cards, said Jordan shoes were the top-selling brand on its platform in 2021, with Jordan sneakers reselling 54% of more than the retail price.

“The popularity of Air Jordans can be largely tied to the level of exclusivity. Virtually all Jordan releases are limited edition, which means there are never enough to satisfy market demand,” said Jesse Einhorn, Senior Economist at StockX, via email.

Einhorn said the request for Jordans was also tied to pop culture. Following the April 2020 release of “The Last Dance” on Netflix, a documentary that followed Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls as they sought their sixth National Basketball Association title in 1997, trading in Jordan sneakers increased by more than 40%.

INCREASE IN DEMAND DURING LOCKDOWN

While many retailers have seen a slowdown in demand during the COVID-19 pandemic, some collectible store owners said they’ve benefited from a surge of customers looking to spend the extra cash.

“I guess because people got their stimulus checks and so on, they had more disposable income to spend on things. A lot of people were stuck at home and they wanted to do something with their money,” said Godfrey Chui, owner and chief buyer of streetwear retailer OD Toronto, in an interview.

“The other reason the market is up is that there was a huge movement and subculture of new collectors on TikTok, so recently there’s been a spike in demand, especially for women’s sneakers. .”

Before the pandemic, Chui said he offered around 15-20 pairs of women’s sneakers in his store and has now expanded to have an entire wall dedicated to them.

But it’s not just social media that has helped women’s sneaker collection become more mainstream.

Makeway co-owner Shelby Weaver said there had always been a very strong group of collectors, but with a big shift to remote working during the shutdowns, more people turned to buying casual clothes.

Weaver said Jordans were the most popular shoes in his store, which targets women and members of the LGBTIQA+ community.

“It is by far our most popular brand. It’s even hard to get an account with [the Jordan brand] now having one already is almost a privilege in the sneaker world,” Weaver said over the phone.

Weaver added that over the past five years the shoe brand has started to focus more on what shoe collectors want, but many product versions are bought by investors who want to make money. with the collection rather than wearing them.

“It’s a bit of a weird gray area for stores because the demand is really high right now, which is what makes us successful, but a lot of people are buying them just to resell them, which takes the products away from people who love them. I guess that’s just what the sneaker game is now,” she said.

A mother says her son’s bright orange sneakers are what led to his miraculous rescue recently on the Mississippi River following a barge accident, according to WCCO.

On June 3, Jeremy Koenig, 45, and his four children, ages 11 to 3, were fishing in the Mississippi River in Red Wing, Missouri, when a barge collided with their small boat, cops said . The children were all wearing life jackets, according to Central Daily.

Witnesses said Koenig and three of his four children reached shore, but one of his children, Vincent, was stuck in the water, WCCO reported.

In the murky water, the boy, Vincent, 5, could be spotted by his bright orange trainers, according to the family.

“Vincent was stuck underneath and thank goodness he was wearing orange bottom shoes. Jeremy spotted his shoes and was able to find him. It is not known how long Vincent was submerged underwater. I was told all bystanders were extremely wonderful and started CPR until EMS arrived,” the boy’s mother wrote on her Caring Bridge site.

The boy is currently at the Mayo Clinic and apparently does not have brain damage. The Mayo Clinic tells WCCO that the boy is in critical condition at this time.

Can you believe it? adidas x Gucci has actually arrived, having breathlessly anticipated the earth-shattering collaboration since its reveal in early 2022. Finally, it’s all available online and at select Gucci outposts.

From Gazelle sneakers to co-branded track jackets, everything adidas x Gucci is deeply rooted in the deliberately kitsch retro sportswear that Gucci’s creative director, Alessandro Michele, has long incorporated into his designs, except it’s ” authenticated,” if you will, by the adidas trefoil that adorns so many pieces.

Co-branded Gazelle hats, jackets, shirts, sweatpants, jumpsuits, skirts, bags, sandals and trainers – although this is just the first drop of the adidas x Gucci collab, there’s a huge selection at hand.

It all dropped on June 7 via the Gucci website, the adidas CONFIRMED app and, shortly, a series of adidas x Gucci pop-up stores, with prices in line with Gucci’s inclinations.

The bags range from $1,350 for a small crossbody clutch to a $3,900 duffel bag, perfectly sized to carry his tennis racquets from the clubhouse to the court, while the 11 collaborative adidas Gazelle sneakers weigh in at $850 each. .

Likewise, t-shirts cost north of $700 each and jackets reach $2,700 or more.

But who could have expected less of the impressive spread? You don’t get a full Gucci monogram for cheap.

Everything seen in the adidas x Gucci lookbook is available for purchase for My Gucci account holders and adidas CONFIRMED members, including adidas x Gucci hats given away at the Oscars and adidas jersey dresses recently worn by a few. celebrities.

However, some of the pieces from the “Exquisite Gucci” show have yet to be released – adidas x Gucci are just getting started.

This is another weekly roundup of this week’s best sneakers. Weekly Archive for the week beginning May 30, 2022.

New Balance CT302

The New Balance CT302 adds a blend of performance qualities and casual elegance in a classic silhouette. It is derived from a classic 80s tennis shoe, giving it a timeless style. It’s also designed to be rugged for everyday portability, like it was in the field all those years ago.

Three colors are announced for the CT302 sneaker. This includes the neutral colors of ‘White Moonbeam’, the blue hues of ‘Blue Multicolor’ as well as the bolder ‘Red Multicolor’. Each sneaker features the court’s heritage “N” logo on the sides along with a stacked midsole.

The New Balance CT302 will release this week on June 3, 2022, in both colorways.

Jordan Retro 4

Nike has released two variations of the Air Jordan Retro 4. This includes the “Military Black” and “Infrared” colorways.

The sneaker features a predominantly nubuck upper, which indulges in various contrasting shades to give it its respective names. This can be seen on the TPU eyelets, Jumpman logos and the underside of the tongue. Additionally, the varying shades of gray on both sneakers can be seen on the mesh profile, laces, and inner lining.

The “Military Black” colorway also brings a junior size. Get your hands on all new colorways of the Jordan Retro 4 starting June 4, 2022.

Archive Weekly: last trainers available this week (May 30, 2022)

Jordan Retro 5 ‘Green Bean’

The Air Jordan Retro 5 was brought back into the fold in the mid-2000s after popular demand from sneaker fans. It returns once again in 2022 with the ‘Green Bean’ colourway.

The Air Jordan 5 has been a mainstay of the brand since its return nearly 20 years ago. There’s always a sense of nostalgia with its release, bringing new colorways with it. It features a fully reflective silver upper and a green accent scattered throughout the design.

The Air Jordan Retro 5 ‘Green Bean’ will be available from June 5, 2022.

Archive Weekly: last trainers available this week (May 30, 2022)

Nike LeBron 19 ‘Hard Helmet’

The Nike LeBron 19 ‘Hard Hat’ brings an almost entirely yellow theme to the sneaker. It falls ahead of the American summer and emphasizes that it’s all about having the right tools to build a championship-worthy team.

It features a “canary yellow” base throughout, including the upper, eyelets, midsole, and signature branding on the plastic panel. The all-yellow base is contrasted with black detailing in select areas, including ‘LBJ’ branding and the hazard stripe Swoosh logo. Another notable styling element is the air bubble sole to complete the design.

The Nike LeBron 19 ‘Hard Hat’ will be available from June 2, 2022.

Are there any new additions you’ll add to your sneaker collection as of The Weekly Archive (May 30, 2022)?

As always, you can purchase any of the upcoming sneakers online at ArchiveStore.co.za, as well as at Archive stores nationwide.

Securing your retail sneaker grails has become tougher than ever, but according to StockX’s Most Traded Sneakers in April, it’s not just the super-limited hype pairs that are in high demand.

I honestly can’t remember the last time I managed to get my hands on a pair of fashionable sneakers at retail. That’s not to say I haven’t tried – I’ve played my hand in more than enough raffles on what feels like the entire length of the internet, and not once have I managed to overcome the L.

StockX has been my saving grace on more than one occasion. Nike Air Jordan 1 “Mocha”, Dunk Low “UNC”, sacai Vaporwaffle “Sail/Gum?” Each of these pairs came to me via the secondary market for at least twice the retail price.

Unfortunately, that’s how the game is these days. According to StockX’s Most Traded Sneakers in April, it’s not just big-name collabs and popular AJ1 colorways that are driving the platform’s sales.

Unsurprisingly, the most traded sneaker of the month was the “Panda” Dunk Low, which ironically sits above the classic white Air Force 1 Low – the very shoe our editor Tora Northman said the “Panda “Dunks replace.

While the hype for these monochromatic Dunks is undeniable, it’s odd to see white Air Force 1s taking second place. As a general release shoe that is stocked seasonally throughout the year, it’s not the type of sneaker one would expect to trade so heavily.

Perhaps it’s worth considering that Air Force 1 prices have risen sharply over the past few years and experienced a prolonged drought throughout the peak of the pandemic, leading resellers to buy inventory and further inflate prices.

The YEEZYs also occupy multiple spots in the top 10, with three colorways of the Boost 350 V2 taking third, fourth, and sixth place.

Additional sneakers on the list include two pairs of Air Jordan 1 Mids – “Linen” and “Light Smoke” – the Air Jordan 4 “Red Thunder” and the YEEZY Wave Runner 700 “Solid Grey”.

If you still want to secure any of the featured pairs, you can buy your size now through StockX.

The current state of sneaker culture, like many other collectible hobbies, is driven by exclusivity. The fewer pairs made, the higher the hype. Week after week, people around the world flood stores and apps trying to get hold of the latest limited edition, most often only to end up with the dreaded L on every release date. But even the luckiest (or best-booted) of sneaker heads really can only dream of the top echelon of limited releases, the Exclusive Player.

What is a Player Exclusive?

In its simplest form, a Exclusive Player (or PE for short) is exactly what it sounds like: an exclusive colors of a given model of shoe which is exclusive to an individual NBA player or players. Typically these are colors designed to match the team colors of the player the PE is intended for, such as the air jordan 1 Chicago colors. Sometimes PEs are also adorned with a player’s personal logo, like all shoes in the Curry range. However, not all PEs are created equal.

When most people talk about EP, they are only referring to colors that exist on already popular shoes. Therefore, almost all noteworthy EPs are variations of Iconic shoes. Very rarely, if ever, does a “team shoe” PE become coveted. There are a few exceptions, but no one really wants their own pair of Nike HyperDunks with Draymond Green’s personal logo on it. Sorry, Dray. Unique colors of retro air jordans will always be at the top of the “best PE” lists. Still.

Player Exclusive Schools

Jordan 36 UNC PE

Some of the most wanted PE shoes aren’t even technically exclusives for gamers but rather specific to the school colors. Adidas made shoes for Indiana, Miami and Louisville, offering their line of Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, Dame Lillard and other designs to schools. To no one’s surprise, Adidas also struggled to bring schools into the new Yeezy basketball performance shoes.

New balance hasn’t quite figured out how to market its Kawhi Leonard line of shoes to schools, only adding Boston College to its roster in recent years. under protection works with Maryland, Auburn and South Carolina, giving them access to Stephen Curryas well as the kicks of Joel Embiid. Converse had its heyday until Michael took to the court, providing the only athletic shoe specifically designed for basketball. But since the air jordan revolution, Creverse has not been able to recover since. But that’s okay, since Nike bought the former Kings of Sole in 2003 for $315 million. If you can’t beat them, get bought by them.

Nike distributes apparel and footwear to Arizona, USC, Duke, UConn and Oklahoma State, sending the latest Kyries, Russell Westbrook and Nike LeBrons at their doorstep. Paige Bueckers, who has a similar playing style to Kyrie, rocked his signature show while playing at UConn. Duke’s relationship is something you should already know before considering Zion Williamson ripped a pair of Paul George iconic shoes during his tenure as Blue Devil. Zion wouldn’t have torn a pair of James james shoes, I can tell you.

But the big fish, Jordan Brandmanufactures models for several university programs, including Michigan, Florida, Georgetown, North Carolina, Marquette and Oklahoma.

Notice that each pair of shoes in this photo has the University logo on the tongue, as well as the school colors. It’s a telltale sign of a school PE and something that elevates a pair on a similar theme. colors. Take for example the “UNC” Jordan 3. Under Michael Jordan attending the University of North Carolinaa lot of jordan retro are published these days in “UNC” theme colors. Typically adorned with “Carolina blue”, these retro tend to resell a little more expensive than the average retro, but nothing out of the ordinary. In the case of the Jordan 3 UNC released in 2020, the pair is predominantly white with hits of Carolina Blue near the elephant print, as well as on the Jumpman logos. The pairs are currently selling on sites like StockX for around $450.

Compare this with the Jordan 3 UNC PE from 2018 which is exactly the same colors, except this time it has the North Carolina logo on the tongue instead of the Jumpman logo. These pairs have an average sale price of $4,000 these days. Is this modified logo really worth nearly 10 times as much money? I don’t think anyone would say that’s the determining factor of the price. But since the PE sneakers were never sold in stores and were only originally made available to students and staff involved in school sports teams, the rarity of the model skyrockets the price. Likewise, many believe that the demand for PEs such as the Jordan 3 is what drives the brand to later release very similar products. colors in a much larger version.

There is no school that receives more PE consistently than the University of Oregon. Due to being located a stone’s throw from Nike headquarters in Beaverton, (and because the co-founder of Nike is a former), UO gets all kinds of PE. There are even collectors who only focus on ducks colors. P.J. Tucker made himself a cottage industry playing in the most coveted shoes in the game and when he wore a Oregon Ducks F&F PE Jordan 13 during last year’s NBA Finals warm-ups. Sneaker Twitter nearly exploded.

PJ is the perfect transition to specific player PEs. While Tucker is known for playing in the most high-profile kicks in games and warm-ups, more often than not he’s playing in someone else’s EP. Until the 2019 season, the NBA had a rule in the books that required each player’s shoes to primarily match the colors of their uniform. (This is how we get the largely wrong “Banned” air jordan 1 history, but that’s for another time) And since there are only a limited number of sneakers that are suitable for basketball at a professional level, and an even more limited number of players signed for signature shoe offers, the EP was born.

Some top-rated PEs courtesy of Ray Allen. Allen was one of the original members of “Team Jordan” – Jordan Brandthe first recruits. While most Jordanian athletes would end up playing in ‘Team Jorda’ shoes, Allen was known to wear the same model ‘His Airness’ wore in his days on the court. Allen also ended up being the ‘face’ of the lawsuit air jordan signature line, even after MJ retired for good. Partly because of their rarity, partly because the Jordans look so good in Seattle Sonics colors, and partly because of Ray Allen’s career, most of Allen’s PEs fetch prices at five figures in the secondary market. (Because nobody wants air jordan 22, even if it is an EP).

Players will be playing in all kinds of EPs these days. I saw no less than 10 different variants of the Nike Kobe 6 Protro on the court this season, and not a single one Kobe 6 Protro has been made available or you or me. Speaking of Kobe, when he retired, he received what might be Jordan’s largest collection of EPs. Every model (until its retirement) is done in bright white, with the Jordan 3 and Jordan VIII getting purple and gold accents. (Kobe played in these two models and these specific PE’s are GORGEOUS), and an opposing set that was auctioned off for charity in all black. This set cost $240,100, or about $8,000 a pair. Honestly a bargain by today’s standards.

This is just the tip of the PE iceberg. Every year, sneaker heads tune ESPN only to see what’s on their favorite player’s feet and salivate at the thought of one day owning a similar pair. Or maybe win the lottery and buy a pair of Jeter 11s. Or maybe receive a pair of Carhartt 4s, which is like winning the lottery on your own. It is good to dream.

Musician, actor and multi-talented individual, Harry Styles is no stranger to outlandish outfits. Whether it’s a long dress, a feathered bodysuit adorned with a boa or a double-breasted suit with wide lapels, it is rarely seen in the standard fare.

It’s because he’s a celebrity, of course, but also a close friend of a few famous luxury brands, like Gucci, which he wears all the time. According to HarryFashionArchive.com – which, as the name suggests, documents what he wears every day – Gucci is at his disposal. They made him custom t-shirts, custom pants, custom patterned polo shirts, custom sweater vests, and gave him all of their latest collaborations, like the coveted Gucci Gazelles.

But perhaps most impressive is his collection of custom Gucci pyjamas, a range of polka dot, striped and patterned sets. He recently read a children’s book on BBC Children’s show CBeebies Bedtime Stories, a spot which features a different celebrity reading a different book each evening at 6.50pm local time, just before the kids. should go to bed, but probably not.

Styles told “a heartwarming story celebrating the family home” called In every house, in every street by Jess Hitchman. And while there were surely plenty of kids listening to their nighttime story, their parents, and likely those parents’ older children, were just as glued to the screen. I, too, was intrigued — but only to really see what Styles was wearing. I’ve been looking for similar pajamas since he started wearing his Gucci outfits. As such, his set was hardly a surprise.

However, his shoes were. Styles wore a pair of cheap and clearly worn Vans Authentics, a stark departure from his tight-fitting five-figure, flair-legged pajamas.

To be honest, they don’t look bad at all – and I could never kick a celebrity for wearing something almost anyone can afford. It’s just… surprising. In Harry’s house, it seems, shoes, no matter how dirty, dusty or damaged, remain on.
